Five Things You Need to Know about Sea Breeze 2015

The U.S.-Ukraine co-hosted maritime exercise ‪Sea Breeze 2015‬ will begin Aug. 31. Here are 5 things you need to know before then.


1. What is Sea Breeze? Sea Breeze 2015 is an annual multinational exercise, co-hosted by the U.S. and Ukraine.

The exercise seeks to promote regional security and foster trust, mutual understanding and cooperation between participating nations.

2. What countries are participating in Sea Breeze 2015? Participating nations include Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Moldova, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.


3. What will Sea Breeze involve? Sea Breeze 2015 participants will conduct training both ashore and at-sea. The at-sea phase will train forces to deter illicit trafficking and maintain maritime security in the Black Sea.

Specific skill sets tested in the at-sea phase will include maritime interdiction operations, anti-submarine warfare, and self-defense against small boat attacks.

4. What U.S. forces are involved in Sea Breeze 2015? U.S. participation in Sea Breeze 2015 includes approximately 400 Sailors, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) and a P-3C Orion from Patrol Squadron (VP) 9.

5. Have there been other exercises in the Black Sea this Year? Yes. The U.S. and other Allies participate in several multinational exercises in the Black Sea region every year. U.S. forces participated in Exercise Breeze and Exercise Sea Shield in July, and Exercise Trident Poseidon in May.

The first Sea Breeze exercise took place in 1997 and is now in its 14th iteration. The exercise represents a long-term effort to improve regional cooperation and maritime security.
